While surfing the Piazo boards this afternoon I came across a discussion regarding character creation and the generation of attributes. It got me thinking about the difference between the stats generated via point buy and those generated by rolling of dice. I was curious as to which you guys preferred and why.

I'm currently using the point buy system but I'm thinking of doing a version of rolled stats for my next campaign. Here are just a few thoughts to get the discussion started.

Point Buy
Pro's
DM can choose a point buy to limit the power of characters
Players have ultimate control over their character's stats
Players can chose to select character attributes to fit specific character concept
Players can tweak their stats to meet specific requirements for specific feats, classes, etc.
Randomness is minimized
[/list:u]

Con's
May lead to vanilla characters who are "slotted" to be paragons of specific classes/builds
May tend to min/max of mechanics over RP potential
Does not assist in players thinking of unique characters or builds
Randomness is minimized
[/list:u]

Rolled Stats
Pro's
Potential for kick ass attributes
Limits Min/Maxing of character mechanics
May require players to "think outside the box" and make choices based upon random elements
Can be a pretty exciting part of character roll up <img src=" title="Razz" />
[/list:u]

Con's
Limits the DM's control of the power of characters
Potential for really low attributes
Potential to frustrate players who have a "definitive" character build in mind
[/list:u]

Well, that's what I have so far. Thoughts?

From my perspective, the issue with rolled stats isn't so much low vs. high attributes or the roleplaying aspects it's more the power dynamic of a group. Back in 2nd ed when rolling stats was the norm it was almost inevitable that someone in the party would have lousy stats and someone would be a god. It's the nature of random rolling. It is treacherous ground for a group; however, I think our own group is composed of players experienced enough to have a lot of fun with a 6 in Con. So, I'm pretty okay with doing it...I think it'd be fun.

personally I like the idea of doing rolled mostly, but in games where I don't know the players? point buy all the way. This gives me a standard and unified way of creating a party without worrying that people like..cheated on rolls at home or whatever. so unless the group is meeting in front of me, it's point buy.

Also there is the "Array" set up..where you give people certain values and allow them to plug them in as needed. for me, a good high fantasy array would be like 17, 16, 15, 14, 12, 11 or something similar. it means everyone is coming in with the same values, it's all about where you put them.

Shanwof,

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. When the DM needs more control then it's best to stick with point-buy.

I've walked into games where people basicly used "special" (read: messed up, or weighted) die to roll themselves 4 "18s" and 2 "16"s or something like that..and I was the only one using a regularly rolled character and so my stats sucked in comparison. so yeah..point buy, or at least make people use the GM's dice.
