I'm posting the crafting rules -- first from the PHB, then from the DMG -- per Matt's request:

C r a f t i n g - M u n d a n e

You can craft nonmagical objects, including adventuring equipment. You must be proficient with tools related to the object you are trying to create (typically artisan's tools). You might also need access to special materials or locations necessary to create it. For example, someone proficient with smith's tools needs a forge in order to craft a sword or suit of armor.
For every day of downtime you spend crafting, you can craft one or more items with a total market value not exceeding 5 gp, and you must expend raw materials worth half the total market value. If something you want to craft has a market value greater than 5 gp, you make progress every day in 5-gp increments until you reach the market value of the item. For example, a suit of plate armor (market value 1,500 gp) takes 300 days to craft by yourself. (The Player's Guide for WOTC's current Organized Play campaign allows a common Potion of Healing to be crafted as a mundane item, taking 10 days and 50gp...)

Multiple characters can combine their efforts toward the crafting of a single item, provided that the characters all have proficiency with the requisite tools and are working together in the same place. Each character contributes 5 gp worth of effort for every day spent helping to craft the item. For example, three characters with the requisite tool proficiency and the proper facilities can craft a suit of plate armor in 100 days, at a total cost o f 750 gp.
.
.
.
CRAFTING A MAGIC ITEM

The creation of a magic item is a lengthy, expensive task. To start, a character must have a formula that describes the construction of the item. The character must also be a spellcaster with spell slots and must be able to cast any spells that the item can produce. Moreover, the character must meet a level minimum determined by the item's rarity, as shown in the Crafting Magic Items table.

Common magic item: 100 gp, minimum level: 3rd
Uncommon magic item: 500 gp, minimum level: 3rd
Rare magic item: 5,000 gp, minimum level: 6th

For example, a 3rd-level character could create a wand of magic missiles (an uncommon item), as long as the character has spell slots and can cast magic missile. That same character could make a +1 weapon (another uncommon item), no particular spell required.

An item has a creation cost specified in the Crafting Magic Items table. A character engaged in the crafting of a magic item makes progress in 25 gp increments, spending that amount for each day of work until the total cost is paid. The character is assumed to work for 8 hours each of those days. Thus, creating an uncommon magic item takes 20 days and 500 gp. (A common Potion of Healing would take 4 days and 100gp to craft as a magic item...)

If a spell will be produced by the item being created, the creator must expend one spell slot of the spell's level for each day of the creation process. The spell's material components must also be at hand throughout the process. If the spell normally consumes those components, they are consumed by the creation process. if the item will be able to produce the spell only once, as with a spell scroll, the components are consumed only once by the process. Otherwise, the components are consumed once each day of the item's creation. Multiple characters can combine their efforts to create a magic item if each of them meets the level prerequisite. Each character can contribute spells, spell slots, and components, as long as everyone participates during the entire crafting process. Each character can contribute 25 gp worth of effort for each day spent helping to craft the item.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, CRAFTING MUNDANE ITEMS IS CHEAPER -- BUT TAKES LONGER PER UNIT COST THAN CRAFTING MAGIC ITEMS (5gp progress per day vs 25gp progress per day)...

Greetings all!

So, in order to provide a more useful regional map I've updated it a bit and removed the 'fog of war'. Hopefully the coloration will also be easier to write on!

Greetings!

First, let me say I am totally stoked to be able to grab the helm and DM again. I've learned a lot from you guys and I hope to put much of it into action. Smile

Okay, let's get down to the basics first...

We'll be using the DND 5E rules and tweak them as needed for our style of play and to make things 'work' in the campaign setting. Feel free to offer suggestions and whatnot. I'll try to be reasonable but reserve my power to use Rule O.

As promised, the campaign will center around the character's motivations, actions and the consequences of their choices. Player's should be prepared to roleplay their characters and are expected to come up with a backstory for each that helps us all understand how they fit into their world. (A write up after the August 29th is helpful.... a bulleted list of important stuff is just fine.)

Port Harbor Campaign Sagas Setting Guide - This guide will help fill out the campaign setting of the game. I'll be making additions to this as I have time and I'll put it in a different post and notate the sections I've added. The 'final' version will be made after September 19th.

Since I've already been asked this.. Players can choose from any of the classes and races provided in the Player's Handbook. I am NOT limiting alignment. Due to the nature of the homebrew some flavor of things will need to be tweaked. I'll make note of this in the settings guide.

Things to think on for the August 29th session...but we can discuss on forums too...

Type of Game:

- What type of game do you want? Dungeon crawls, political intrigue, heavy combat, exploration, mix?

Character Issues:
- How do you want to generate stats?
- Want to start as 0-level characters or 1st level?
- Running multiple characters... swapping in and out as time is needed for 'downtime activities' or multiples in the party at the same time?
- Want to use the 'renown' system?

Port Harbor:
- How old/large is Port Harbpor? I can run Port Harbor from a relatively recent settlement with the wilds basically at the door, where the local power structure hasn't been firmed up yet and there is general lawlessness to a 10 year-old town where the wilds are pushed back quite a bit and government is firmly entrenched. Or, anywhere in between...

Looking forward to hearing from you guys!!

** Please Note ** This is an option we'll discuss at the initial session on August 29th.

Determining Character Abilities Scores

Players will select their character's ability scores from one of the sets in the Ability Score Pool. The scores in the set may be assigned as the player sees fit.

This Ability Score Pool is generated AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CAMPAIGN in the following manner:

Each player generates three sets of ability scores. An ability score is determined by rolling 4d6, dropping the lowest number and adding up the remaining dice. If the resulting set doesn't provide a positive overall ability bonus, it must be discarded and a new set rolled. Once a player has generated three viable sets he or she chooses one to enter into the Ability Score Pool.

*** It is hoped that this procedure gives some of the benefits of generating ability scores when using both the rolling and point buy methods. It allows for the randomness of rolling without the need to get stuck with an 'unusable' result. As with a point buy system, it helps players know what their options are in regards to later characters and no DM input is needed when determining ability scores. Likewise it helps the DM know the relative 'power' of current and future characters relative to one another.

Having managed to not screw up the meeting with the metallic dragons, the crew returns to Waterdeep to inform the Council about the demands set forth by the Dragons to be met before they lent their aid.

With his share of the hoard of Arauthator, Tim (now a Drow) bought a component and reagent shop in town.

For the low price of 2500 GP, Tim bought the establishment lock, stock, and barrel. He immediately changed the name to Odds & Ends, and spent 100 GP to renovate (new paint, new uniforms, more stock, etc.) and reopened. He helped to run the store for 20 days while waiting to return to the Metallic Dragon council.

For it's first month (-ish) of operations, Tim worked hard to build a customer base, and set up the business to run smoothly while he was away.
Maintenance costs:

  • Daily Operational Costs: 60 gp [(2gp/day)*30 days]
  • Employee Salaries: 60 GP [1 skilled hireling * 2 GP/day * 30 days]
  • Total Costs: 120 GP

Bank Account:

  • Initial Deposit: 3,633 GP
  • Less Business Purchase: (2,500 GP)
  • Current Balance: 1,133 GP
  • Less Renovation costs: (100 GP)
  • Current Balance: 1,033 GP
  • Less 1st month's maintenance costs: (60 GP)
  • Current Balance: 973 GP

Running the Business:

  • First Month's Roll: 34 [1d100+20 (days Tim worked this month)]
  • Results: You must pay half the business's maintenance costs for each of the days. Profits cover the other half.

Notes:

  • Last Will left with bank indicating turning the business and all accounts over to the employees in the event of Tim's death.
  • Current Months Operating Costs in account: 8 months, 3 days

Hi yall. I'm not good at introductions, so this may sound kinda like a ramble. But I figured after a few one-shots, I should probably introduce myself.

My name it Ty. I'm a male between the ages of 18 and 80. I live in Colorado. I like long walks on the beach....... well, maybe not.

Well, first thing to learn about me is that I pretty much take everything at face value, unless I know better. Which most the time I don't. And I'm blunt. My corners are not very rounded off. I like to add fun where I can. Sometimes it offends, and if so, I didn't mean to. My best friend is gay, my girlfriend is psychotic, my mother is more devout than the pope, and I find the company of black people to be some of the best times I had growing up. I grew up redneck, so there's really no forbidden words from my vocabulary. And now I'm a geek through and through. I WoW (those of you who know, know. those of you who don't, won't), and will use it as reference for a lot of things in the fantasy world. D&D was my introduction to the world of RPG. I've dabbled in some online forums, a little bit of Gaia, and a touch of Furcadia, so there's not really a whole lot that I haven't seen yet. But I moved more into real-time role play as the phrase TLDR came to mind more and more. I've got a short attention span, k?

In the sake of keeping it short, so that I don't get TLDR'd, just wanna say Hi to everyone, and hope this helps bring a little more insight into who I am.

I see that everyone else is posting in Like_a's intro post. I'm breaking free of that constraint as I need room to flex my ego. Besides, if we get quite a few people in here that would make that thread LOOOOOOOOONG.

I'll be known in here as Martini Saint...not exactly what's on my birth certificate but I'm looking into getting my name changed to it. I've been gaming for a little over a decade and a half now both as a GM and as a player. I'm pretty content on either side of the screen. I've played various different systems; I suppose I've primarily gone with D&D being it is the easiest one to find players for but really prefer the non-level systems.

I started a blog a while back about GMing and Like_a asked me to throw them over onto this site so you'll see some posts from me there if you wander into that area.

The Lands
Cosmology
The world known as The Lands lies on the outside of an arm of a spiral galaxy that the southerners call The River of Milk. The Star system lies tilted perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy and so the northern hemisphere faces towards the dark of space with few stars in the sky and because of the constant cloud cover that varies from light to complete, most of the north knows nothing of the sky except the bright star they call Bright, the two moons that orbit opposite of each other, and three bright stars.
The two moons are Orind the orange-ish of the two and Pellar the white. Both are largish and bright enough to give good low light vision. Legend says they were once sisters in love with the hero Bright but fought over him and since he was unable to make a decision the gods cast them into the sky forever and the two sisters, still not reconciled stay as far away from each other as possible and spend equal time with Bright.
Bright is a G2V star of Magnitude 4.91 and is 9.91 parsecs away from The Lands.
The three stars are an apparent magnitude 1.5 named Tildor, located out from the Thirtieth longitude, Andre, a 3.5 due north, and Sillia a 4.8 red near the horizon.

Gilding
The hamlet of Gilding where you all grew up and is the only town you know (boy are you in for a shock!) has only one reason for existing at all...It sits atop the richest gold deposit in the northern hemisphere. It was found and founded by escaped prisoners (pressed into digging the Tomb of the Di Ching Emperor which is 8 furlongs (1760 yards) away). The forge is located on the edge of town right next to the entrance to the mine. The town currently has 377 people that all live inside the 12 foot high and 15 foot wide wall made of quartz chunks. There is one inn and one great hall and one general store (get the picture?) for a total of 42 buildings all made from the quartz chunks. Most houses are two stories but houses several families each. As a result races that normally would have little to do with each other live and mix freely. And because a smaller town needs less people to guard the perimeter, many family's of several races reside under one roof. Llewlln live in the attic areas, Elves on the second stories, Humans on ground floor and Dwarves in the basements, most times each has their own entrance, but in some cases there is a common room with stairways and such for access, being in case of emergency a single doorway is easier to defend. No buildings back to the wall and an area is always kept clear for 15 feet from the wall. In addition several houses are usually adjacent to each other. The main road enters from the north through a 25' wide by 20' high gate and the only other gates are from the south the large one is 20' wide and 15' high and to 10' to the east is a man gate 4' wide by 6' high (yes, elves and half-orcs have to duck.). The southern gate leads to the fields and pastures. Each morning as the sun is rising and the late watch is about to retire, the first watch accompanies the farmers and herders with their herds of sheep and cattle out to their fields along with many of the young people. The farmers and herders inspect the fields to make sure that no undead have set up shop and to protect the young ones as they collect sticks and branches for fire wood for the houses and for the pyre that is lit each night to burn all that has died that day to prevent it from rising again.
A hundred feet from the wall begins the Greenwood Forest. An incredibly dense evergreen forest of Fir and Hemlock that you have been told once was brighter and full of life. Animals in the air, climbing trees, moving though the underbrush, but in your lifetime all you have seen of this is drawings on the inside walls of the elves and dwarfs houses...accept for the rats. When they were alive they scurried about and got into everything but in the last few years only zombie rats have been seen. The baby cradles are hung from the ceiling with large polished gold cones overhead to keep them from sliding down the chains and eating the children and the same is true for the legs of the beds and everybody wears knee high heavy leather boots for they know no fear of daylight and their hunger is relentless.

The Mine
The mine sits towards the south west corner and the shaft runs straight down for 80 feet and is accessed via a winch system, then runs horizontal for close to mile towards the south west. It consists of a main vein 4-6' wide and 14' high with pure gold running through a quartz matrix. It yields about 2.5 pounds per three cubic feet but has hardly been worked for the last 30 years because of a large stockpile and the lack of any caravans the last of which was 20 years ago.

The Tomb
The entrance to the Tomb of the Di Ching Emperor which is 8 furlongs (1760 yards) away lies north-east of town.

The town historian has kept track of when and how many volunteers and adventurers have been sent to control the "pests" that periodically start wandering out and plaguing the surrounding countryside and also how many returned. The numbers are not heartening. The last bunch was sent only 15 years ago. None returned and the various creatures seemed to not have been more that slightly reduced. Recently the number of people gone missing has increased with both men and women, who work in the fields outside of town, and children, who tend to be to adventurous and not attentive enough, all falling victim. The local leaders have sent to the capital repeatedly for assistance and either none of the messengers have gotten through or have been completely ignored in either case no word has returned. Now it has been decided that the best and brightest that are left need to go and do what they can to save their town. That's you.
Gilding is dying.

After all this time, I was rereading the AP and they actually give the real name of the Old Beldame. I just missed it the first time:

At this point, I'll just have her refuse to answer to it.

21 Kuthona 4711: Davor reports hearing the following from his Druid's council meeting:

  • The Archdruid still in parts unknown to the west studying unusual planar activity.
  • The Boggards are moving out of the swamp lands (Hooktongue Sluagh?). Something has stirred them up.
  • Giant Tribes & the Tiger Lord Barbarians have drawn a truce
  • The Great Beast that Sleeps stirs. The trees have felt it moving.
  • Centaurs are ill at ease with taking actions against the Varnhold invaders. May need assistance.
  • Murmurs of reports about First World / Eldest amongst Fey
  • The Warg "Howl of the Wind" has reportedly gone missing.

3 Calistril 4712: Davor reports speaking with Theressea the Dryad about the Satyr youngling. She reported that his aura showed blue streamers, indications of Eldest ancestry. She suggested to pray that his father never showed up. Helna...what have you done?

Old Lead: Wanted Poster for Shambling Mound Sap

Old Lead: Are we doing anything with developing the Blue Flower (Calithigar?)/Brown Mold Combo we found near the Skunk River? Thinking a possible manufacturing outlet for our kingdom if we can corner the market on cold food storage.

Hey there,

I am just finishing making an "at-a-glance" yearly calender for 4712.

I have listed all the major holidays and celestial events for 4712.

Do you guys want me to list the holidays for other religions? [i.e. rovogug, pharasma, etc?]

Also, I remember us declaring some holidays.

Off the top of my head, we have:

  • 11-13 Desnus 4711: Stagsfall
  • 11 Sarenith 4711: Day of Feasting [I think this was in regards to meeting the representatives of the Outlaw Council, but I certainly could be wrong]

Did we have any other declared festivals?

If not, here are some good days for nomination:

  1. 1 Pharast 4711: Day the Charter was issued
  2. 19 Pharast 4711: Found & Cleared out the Erastil Holy Temple that Jhod now oversees.
  3. 20 Desnus 4711: Found Blue Flower Baby & Brown Mold
  4. 26 Desnus 4711: Found & Restored Old Dead Eye Reserve
  5. 10 Sarenith 4711: Met Outlaw Council
  6. 5 Erastus 4711: Gnome Vassals Arrive
  7. 15 Arodus 4711: Lilly's Pad Brothel Opens in Twin Axe
  8. 1 Neth 4711: Work Started to restore Tuskwater Keep

Let me know, and I can get this thing ready for publication.

Thanks,

Berwick

The Advanced Race Guide just came out. I've perused the PDF.

Here are my initial thoughts regarding races I would allow for future characters or companions:

- Catfolk
- Changeling
- Grippli
- Kobold (black dragon heritage only)
- Any of the racial subtypes for core humanoid races are acceptable, excepting underground themed ones (half-drow, deep dwarves, deep kin half orcs, lava gnomes)

Any other option from this book would require some significant backstory. Of course, I don not mean to imply that I'm out murder your characters horribly in your sleep - simply that if any future character deaths occur and a raise dead isn't desired, these options would be available.

Kingmaker will be an adventure best described as "Swords in the Wilderness".

The hale, intrepid explorers composing your party will be expected to head forth into the wild, magical lands called The Stolen Lands and tame them. Of course, there are many creatures inhabiting these lands, and some of them may not take well to intrusion. Fey, centaurs, giants and all manner of magical beasts are all known to roam the Stolen lands; whether you fight them or court their alliances is up to your group.

Of course, beyond simply exploring there is the matter of developing the land, a task which you are also charged with undertaking. It is the hope that the seeds of a kingdom may grow under the wise rule of your character's leadership. It takes many types to build a kingdom - charismatic rulers, wise councilors, and strong generals. All may expect to bear the burden of leadership to some extent.

Greetings!

So, apparently Yahoo.com has changed a few privacy settings and ... blah blah blah... which was resulting in some not getting email notifications of recent postings. I've changed email domains internally to gmail.com. Hopefully this works...

Let me know if you are still having issues.

So, apparently some forums have their attachment allowance size set to 0. Not sure why this is. However, if you want to post in a thread and you get an error regarding the image being above the size limit and that limit reads "0" please let me know and I'll change it.

Sorry about that.

Howdy,

I've been looking for a Dice Roller to either incorporate into the forum or to link to. I've not had tons of luck. However, if you find a Dice Rolling solution please let me know and I'll take a look at it.

So, it appears that the 'invisible mode' has been turned on for all imported accounts. If you wish to be listed as 'online' when browsing the forums please check your control panel/profile and make sure the relevant choice is turned off.

The conversion didn't quite take on the signatures and avatars.

First, go into the 'Control Panel' - 'Account Settings' and make sure that you have the 'Use signature as default', 'Show signatures', 'Show Avatars' options set to 'yes'.

Signatures:
BBCoding on signatures may result in HUGE text. Simply fix this by retyping the signatures with the new system.

Avatars:
Simply delete and reupload the image file for your avatar if it doesn't appear on your messages after your first login.

Thanks

Alrighty,

The transition to the FUDForum software is making good progress. I'm sure there are still a few things to iron out. If you come across an issue please report it in this area.

GURPS is a flexible system that spans a broad range of genres. It is classless, using character points to build and advance characters as you wish. The power level of the campaign is chosen by the GM and is reflected in total starting character points.

The system can be very flexible, although there is more front-loading of character generation. The combat system has numerous options that make combat more realistic (and deadly).

And their sourcebooks are just gorram sexy. Their research and references is very... hefty.

Steve Jackson Games give a lite character generation and combat rules - it can be found here.

Duhwoo has some experience in the system; I've read a bit but have only played a couple of times.

Hello, below is a little background on Qitresh, the El'Karne and Monk character that I will be bringing into the Edge of the Waters game. I can't reveal everything about her but hopefully this gives you a look into who she is.

Quentin

Qitresh

Summary: Qitresh is a young woman (19 years old) from The Steps. She was sold at the age of 10 to repay a debt of her fathers to a Ship Captain. Survived an onboard plague and was made an El'Karne. Her mentor "The Dog" trained her as an El'Karne Monk. She did well and worked her way up to high military ships. She was required to Witness a Red Empire navel ship christening where something dramatically changed her view of the Red Empire . She broke contract and left the military service as an El'Karne due to moral concerns. Her reputation was ruined by someone who followed her after that. She is a secret follower of Wella and gave herself over to what path her Goddess chose for her, setting herself adrift in a small boat with just her possesions.

Extended Histroy:

Qitresh was born on a fishing boat her mother captained in a storm. Her mother died after the childbirth due to the need to be cut open in order to get the baby out. There were no healers on board to stop the bleeding and the crude stiches made with fish hooks and line did nothing but cause infection. She died on the trip back to shore to get help. Her father was the boson and raised her as best he could but bad luck seemed to follow him. He lost her mothers boat, running her aground on rocks just off the coast and continually brought in pour hauls to the merchants. He borrowed money to buy another vessel, as fishing was all he knew, but a few years later he sank this one too. The debt owned could not be repaid and his only option was to trade his daughter to pay the debt. She was traded to a Merchant Ship Captain named Grigmack, who had known her Mother. Qitresh never knew the name of her mother as her father refused to talk about her or her death other than to blame Qitresh for it when drunk. The Merchant Captain was a good-natured man and was training her as a sailor, but on her first voyage a plague struck the ship, this plague wiped out almost the entire crew except for the strange man who was the ship's El'Karne, the Captain and 2 other crew besides Qitresh. Qitresh was not effected at all, just as the El'Karne was not, even the Captain and 2 crewmen that survived at least were brought low by it but managed to struggle through. The Captain, impressed by the Qitresh's luck and fortitude talked to "The Dog" and he took her under his tutelage to become an El'Karne Monk. "The Dog" was the toughest, most resilient, physical perfectionist and disciplined person Qitresh had ever met or even heard of. He was a brilliant teacher and taught her the ways of the El'Karne and the discipline of the Monk. Within a year Qitresh was contracted on another merchant vessel, a friend of her first Captain and while not as good natured he was respectful and she kept his ship safe in voyage after voyage. Eventually, the Merchant came into some bad times and sold her contract to a Military Captain who had a Sailing Ship. Qitresh was an excellent El'Karne, in calm seas or hurricane, in battles and in peace, she proved her luck, her worth and her ability to keep her ship safe and weather all that could be thrown at her, never letting a ship she was contracted to sink, be taken in battle or be taken unaware from weather or enemy. In the end she was contracted to one of the highest ranking ships in the Red Empire. Her life was full and her chest was filled with the spoils of her dedication and ability.

Then came a turning in her life, her ship, The Morning Crain, was called in for refitting, she was still under contract and so when the refitting was complete, the re-christening ceremony was to be held, The honor the Morning Crain had earned was so great that a daughter of the Empress, the Lady Deshnac, was to preside over the christening along with the Clerics of the Red Empress, The Captain, Krix Breegick and the Ship's El'Karne, me. I had never yet been at a military christening having spent all my time on ships already sailing, I was excited and even happy to be a part of such a momentous event, a Princess of the Empire, on my ship to christen her and the Clerics to bless her future and read what it would be. I did not know what this meant, I did not know what would be done, I did not bother to find out and so was blindsided by the events that took place that day. I shall not repeat them here, suffice to say, as soon as I was done I left the ship tearing my contract and leaving it on the deck, my floating chest, containing all my possessions following along faithfully behind. I was attacked by the Red Empire's soldiers on the docks to bring me in for the Clerics but easily avoided them running off and boarding a vessel just leaving. They welcomed an El'Karne aboard with open arms and we sailed off immediately.

That was the start of my misfortunes. It seems some magic or else someone or something has followed me since then. I have been on 16 ships, 16 voyages, all ending in deaths of the crew, loss of cargo, raids, Captains leaving without me or any number of other mishaps. All of these things happening while I was not on duty or away from the ship, the causes unknown, the luck and protection I offer useless to stop it.

I have prayed and found my way, I am stranded by my last Captain on the Isle of Awao, he would not let me board and told me to never come back. I will leave my course to Wella, to whatever course she deems I must follow to clear my shame, desolation of my heart and beliefs and regain my balance in the world. I set sail now in a small fising boat I have purchased, just my chest and some food and water for my unknown path ahead. I have tossed the oars overboard after rowing for a day out to the open sea and will see where my fate and my Goddess take me, but never again will I allow the evil I have witnessed to happen where I can stop it. I will find my fate and hope that it is in the bringing low of the Red Empire's evil ways.
